Mounting a GPS In my opinion, having a GPS on your kayak is one of the most important pieces of equipment you should have. It is also one of the more costly items in your yak. I have stored my GPS in a dry bag, but got very annoyed at taking it in and out all the time. I also kept it in my milk crate for a while as well. After getting a few scratches on it, I decided that wasn't a good idea. The decision was finally made to mount it. After debating between several different makes, I decided to stick with the factory Magellan mount to match my GPS. The skill level on a scale of 1-5 is a 1. The tools needed to make this was very minimal:
Before you start, you should have an idea of where you will install the mount. I suggest you decide after you have a few fishing trips under your belt. This will help you decide on where it will or will not be in your way. After you have decided, you may want to mock up the mount. Tape it into the position you want to get the feel of it. If this is the location you want, take out your marker and dot the places you will need to sink the screws with your marker. I'm a mot more anal about the positioning, so I traced the entire mount out. Once that is done, you can apply a few beads of silicon around your pilot marks for the screws. Then turn the mount over and stick it where you want it. Line up the marks and screw it to your yak. That's about it! A very simple, clean install.
