The Crate Mate
The seemingly required milk crate
now has new competition. The Crate Mate tackle bag by 3rd Grip Products is an
innovative new product. Originally designed with the west coast long range and
party boat angler in mind, this unique product is finding its way into the kayak
fishing world.
The Crate Mate has four
rod holders securely riveted at each corner of the bag. The fact that there are
four rod holders on the Crate Mate, means you can delay the decision on where to
drill holes to mount other types of holders. I do recommend a holder mounted
within easy reach in front of you so you can put your rod in it to release that
big fish or to change lures. There are also two external pockets with flaps
secured by velcro for pliers, insect repellent, sunscreen etc. There are four D
Rings that can be used to secure the Crate Mate to your kayak with bungee cords.
Included with the
Crate Mate is a padded
shoulder strap to make transporting the unit, even with four rods, a snap. All
sizes of Plano type tackle organizers will fit the Crate Mate with room left for
a small soft cooler or what ever you need readily available. The Crate Mate is
available in black.

The Crate Mate is designed to fit over a standard size file crate, approximately
11X14X17 inches, almost 2000 cubic inches. The file crates are available at
Staples, Office Max and Office Depot for 5 or 6 bucks. Once the file crate is
fitted inside the Crate Mate there are internal Velcro straps to secure the two
together. The Crate Mate also has draw strings at the top to provide a tight
fit. In addition, there is a top cover that is closed with adjustable nylon
straps and buckles. The Crate Mate is made of industrial grade, weatherproof,
double stitched, denier material that won't snag, tear or fade (under normal
circumstances). The file crates are made with the facility to install casters
and the Crate Mate has reinforced openings to accommodate the casters if
desired. Most yak anglers will not use this feature.
